Governor Perdue Announces $1.2 Million in Grant Awards for Children and Youth

Thursday, September 25, 2003  Contact: Office of Communications 404-651-7774

Atlanta - Governor Sonny Perdue announced today the approval of 28 grants totaling more than $1.2 million to support youth prevention programs in Georgia. These grants will assist in the areas of teen pregnancy prevention using abstinence education, prevention programs for high-risk youth and treatment programs for juvenile offenders.

"Community based programs help keep our kids going in the right direction by reducing risk factors and providing positive role models," said Governor Sonny Perdue. "These grants will help community programs ensure a bright future for Georgia's young people."

The grants were made available through the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Maternal and Child Health Bureau, and the Georgia General Assembly. The grants will be administered through the state's Children and Youth Coordinating Council (CYCC).

CYCC assists local communities in preventing juvenile delinquency through the provision of state and federal grants, technical assistance, training and education of service providers, and juvenile justice law projects. The agency monitors juvenile courts, detention centers and other facilities for compliance with federal regulations and state laws related to the detention of juveniles. CYCC monitors and tracks state and federal legislation and programs related to children and youth, advises the Governor's Office and the General Assembly on the potential impact of programs and legislation, and supports funding requests for programs serving children and youth. In addition, the agency administers the Georgia abstinence education initiative.
