Governor Perdue Signs High Performance Principals Legislation

State to Recruit School Principals with Proven Record of Success

ROSWELL, Ga. – Governor Sonny Perdue signed into law today one his major education initiatives for 2006 – the High Performance Principals legislation (SB468). The bill was signed at Roswell High School before an assembly of approximately 2,500 students, teachers, school administrators and staff.

“Every team needs a great leader to set a great example. In schools that need the most improvement, solid leadership from the principal’s office is essential,” said Governor Sonny Perdue. “High Performance Principals have a proven record of raising student achievement in Georgia’s most challenged schools.”

Governor Perdue included $3 million in his budget to recruit High Performance Principals to lead the state’s Needs Improvement middle and high schools. The legislature approved $2.25 million for the program. The legislature also approved Governor Perdue’s request for $1.5 million to the Georgia Leadership Institute for School Improvement (GLISI) to expand its leadership training.

Recruitment will focus on principals with a proven record of raising a school’s student achievement results. The $2.25 million will be used for additional compensation to attract the best available principals to Georgia’s Needs Improvement middle and high schools.

Senator Dan Moody sponsored the legislation and it was carried in the House by Representative Tom Dickson.
