Governor Perdue Orders Flags Lowered to Half-Staff in Honor of Rosa Parks

ATLANTA – Governor Sonny Perdue today ordered flags on all state buildings lowered to half-staff in memory of Rosa Parks tomorrow, Wednesday, November 2 – the day of her funeral.

“With an act of courage on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks helped awaken the national conscience and inspired Americans to redeem the promise of freedom that is at the heart of our nation,” said Governor Sonny Perdue. “We mourn the passing of a great American.”

Executive Order

FLAGS ON STATE BUILDINGS ORDERED LOWERED TO HALF STAFF

WHEREAS: Ms. Rosa Parks has been referred to as the “Mother of the Modern Civil Rights Movement” and played a pivotal role in American history; and

WHEREAS: In 1996, Ms. Parks received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and in 1999, was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, the nation’s highest civilian honor; and

WHEREAS: The President of the United States of America has ordered that the flag of the United States of America be flown at half staff in honor of Ms. Parks;

NOW, THEREFORE, IN HONOR AND AS A MARK OF RESPECT FOR THE MEMORY OF MS. ROSA PARKS AND HER FRIENDS AND FAMILY, PURSUANT TO THE AUTHORITY VESTED IN ME AS GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA, IT IS HEREBY

ORDERED: That the flags on all State buildings throughout the State of Georgia be flown at half-staff on the day of her interment, Wednesday, November 2, 2005. On such day the flags shall be flown at half-staff until sunset.
