ATLANTA— Today, First Lady Mary Perdue celebrated her July Kids First event in Clayton by hosting a “Season’s Readings” book drive. Hundreds of books were collected to benefit the FAITH, Inc. Power House for Kids Child Advocacy Center and local domestic violence shelter. Guests enjoyed a picnic as First Lady Mary Perdue read to the children and spoke about her Kids First Initiative. During her visit the First Lady also dedicated the Kids Corner Library at the FAITH, Inc. Shelter for Women and Children.

“Each time a community reaches out to Georgia’s most fragile children, it is making a substantial impact in that child’s life. It is my hope that the books collected from this community’s efforts will be a source of comfort and entertainment to the children who come to this Child Advocacy Center.”

FAITH, Inc. is a nonprofit organization which provides free and confidential services to victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault in Rabun, Habersham and Stephens County. FAITH offers services to area women and children that include the Shelter for Women and Children, Power House Child Advocacy Center, Rape Crisis Programs and FAITH Thrift Store.

Kids First is an initiative of the Our Children Campaign. The First Lady canvasses Georgia hosting monthly "Kids First" activities highlighting an area of volunteerism with abused and neglected children. Past Kids First events have included the program's launch that highlighted the First Steps program at Atlanta's Grady Memorial Hospital, a volunteer drive within the Middle Georgia faith community, a baby shower to benefit Families First and a Foster Parent Appreciation Night at the Governor’s Mansion.

“When we address a new community about the needs of foster children we are increasing awareness about the need for strong child advocates in our state,” said First Lady Mary Perdue. “It is my hope that every Georgian who we reach out to will make volunteerism a lasting part of their daily life.”
