ATLANTA – Governor Sonny Perdue announced today Steve Stancil will become Georgia’s State Property Officer, effective Feb. 15.   As part of this position, Stancil will also lead the Georgia Building Authority and State Properties Commission.

“Steve Stancil has served the public for almost two decades, both as an elected official and a state agency head,” said Governor Sonny Perdue. “His experience makes him the perfect candidate to direct the construction and management of the state’s buildings and properties.”

Since 2003, Stancil has served as Executive Director of the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority (GRTA), where he oversaw the highly successful introduction of the Xpress bus system. During his tenure, GRTA also successfully developed a Development of Regional Impact (DRI) review process. Stancil has also championed the TIME task force, which has brought together the broad array of law enforcement, emergency response and others that are charged with responding to and clearing the traffic incidents that cause as much as half of Georgia’s highway congestion. Because of the TIME Task Force efforts, the amount of time necessary to clear incidents from traffic lanes has been reduced substantially.

Before his time at GRTA, Stancil was a real estate broker and a State Representative for 13 years. In 2002, he was the Republican nominee for Lieutenant Governor.

The position of State Property Officer opened when Gena Abraham officially took the reigns as Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Transportation on December 1, 2007.
